Worse before Getting Better?

Exodus 4:31 (NLT), “Then the people of Israel were convinced that the LORD had sent Moses and Aaron. When they heard that the LORD was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.”

For over 400 years, the people of Israel lived in bondage to their Egyptian overlords. They had not heard the voice of the Lord from any prophet. They had no reason to believe the Lord still cared for them or recognized the pain and affliction they were suffering. That was until Aaron declared to them what God had told Moses, and Moses performed miraculous signs and wonders before them. The people believed the word of the Lord because of the supernatural signs that accompanied them - they were able to attach their faith to what they could see. The trouble came however, when instead of letting God’s people go, Pharaoh decided to make their labor even harder, forcing them to produce bricks without providing the straw! If their hardships spoke louder than the promise of freedom, they would become disheartened and not have faith to believe the word of the Lord. When we stand on God’s Word concerning a promise we are believing to see manifest in our lives, we can be tempted to doubt when we don’t see the results of our faith. In fact, when all we experience is the increase of the symptoms or circumstances of the need - it can be easy to give up on our faith altogether. This is the strategy of the devil concerning believers. If he can cause you to give up on your faith before it produces results - he can keep you feeling defeated. God moved mightily on the Hebrew nation’s behalf - He kept His promise, and Moses led them right out of their captivity! Even when it seems things have gotten worse when you have been believing for God’s promise to be fulfilled - don’t become discouraged, don’t give up on your faith - keep trusting in the Lord to perform His Word concerning you - and your promise will come to pass!
