Psalm 126:5 (AMPC), “They who sow in tears shall reap in joy and singing.”
In Ezra 2, we read of the Israelites returning to Israel, after 70 years of exile in Babylon. As much as this was exceptionally wonderful news for God’s people, there were very real challenges they would need to face on their return. They had to re-establish their farms and vineyards after being left alone for a very long time. Some of their farmlands had been burned or ransacked by invaders. It was abundantly clear that to start again would require some pretty intense work - but they were up for the challenge! The tears of effort and hard work would not be for nothing! Instead of trying to cultivate ground in a foreign, strange land that didn’t belong to them - they could pour their hearts, minds, and physical strength into something that would be theirs for generations to come. Their sowing, no matter how challenging, would result in many future harvests! Now some historians believe that a vast number of displaced Israelites still chose to remain in Babylon. It could be that after so many years, they were just not up to being uprooted and then expected to make a life for themselves in a deserted and desolate place. The Psalmist was trying to encourage them to see the bigger picture and give up their present comfort for what would benefit generations of Israelites in the future. For us, any gain, growth, or benefit that comes from being in the Kingdom of God requires faith. To reap and walk in the reality of the abundant life we are offered in Christ, will require our flesh to not just be uncomfortable - that old nature will need to be continually crucified. It takes great determination and diligence to choose faith over fear - but the results are well worth it. What’s more, is that the power of God within us is well able to strengthen and energize us to accomplish whatever the walk of faith requires - once we have made the decision to choose it. Don’t be intimidated by what looks too difficult in the natural when it comes to stepping out in faith. The reward is far greater than anything we could have by choosing to draw back out of fear. Don’t settle for less than God’s plan! Push on in faith - it’s well worth it!
