God's Character can be Trusted

Numbers 23:19 (NLT), “God is not a man, so He does not lie. He is not human, so He does not change His mind. Has He ever spoken and failed to act? Has He ever promised and not carried it through?”

The story of Job may cause some people to believe that God gives and blesses us, and then changes His mind, and takes away what He has given us, at His will. The truth is, this is an assumption that Job had of God, of which he repented after the Lord set him straight (Job 42). It’s an opinion about God’s character that is certainly not concurrent with the Word. Job habitually offered sacrifices on behalf of his sons’, fearing the Lord would punish them for their immoral living. To begin with, Job didn’t understand that his own harbored fear and questionable dealings (Job 1:5; 33:10-11,14) had given the devil legal access to harass him. He was convinced that his good works alone would keep God’s blessing operating in his life. When Job stated his case before the Lord, he spent 27 chapters worth, declaring his righteousness and God’s injustice. Interestingly, like Job, Noah was a man the Bible calls upright too. Only, in Noah’s case, it’s mentioned that “Noah walked in close fellowship with God.” (Genesis 6:9). Whereas Job admitted that he had heard about God, but never really knew Him (Job 42:5-6). When we look at the life of Abraham, who knew little about how to serve God, and yet walked with Him and trusted Him, we see a very different perspective to the one Job had. Romans 4:3 says Abraham believed and trusted in God, and God counted that as righteousness. Abraham never walked in fear of God taking away what He had blessed him with. He knew God and trusted His good nature - even when it came to offering the life of his son Isaac. The Bible says Abraham fully believed that God would raise Isaac from the dead should he die, because Abraham trusted God to keep His Word. Job trusted more in his good works to appease God, than in learning to know and trust in God’s good and faithful character. After Job realized God’s true nature and he repented for a heart that was in fact far from knowing and walking with Him, God restored double of what he had lost. When we truly know God, according to His Word, His love for us casts out all fear. Even when trouble comes, our faith in Him and His Word will cause us to overcome and see His favourable outcome.  Today, be assured that He is trustworthy and will never change His mind concerning you.
