Living In His Rest

Hebrews 4:1(AMPC), “Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still holds and is offered [today], let us be afraid [to distrust it], lest any of you should think he has come too late and has come short of [reaching] it.”

The Bible has much to say about the rest of God. In fact, Hebrews 4:11 puts a real urgency on its importance: “Let us therefore be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], that no one may fall or perish by the same kind of unbelief and disobedience [into which those in the wilderness fell].” This verse tells us what not being in rest produces: Unbelief and disobedience. Which means, when we are in a place of rest - we will be operating in the faith of God and obedience to His will. In Hebrews 4, we are taught that the rest God requires us to be in, is the same as when He rested after creation. Genesis 2:2 says, “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.” This kind of rest is one that is filled with satisfaction, that what has been accomplished is perfect and complete, lacking nothing! For the believer - the revelation and realization of the finished work of the cross and the full benefits that marvelous event won for us, should have the same marked impact on our souls as God had when He completed His work in Genesis 2:2! Through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and the redeeming work of His shed blood - we have been set free from the bondage and slavery of sin. We have been given the position of righteousness with God and authority over the enemy of our souls. The very life and power of God indwells us by His Own Spirit. We have been given access to everything heaven enjoys (Ephesians 1:3) and all things that lead to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). It’s by God’s Own work that we have been given the gift of living in an inseparable relationship with Him, where we can fully know and trust Him and His Word, and live in perfect harmony and obedience to His will with ease and joy. Living in this conscious reality that this finished work of the cross is perfect and complete, lacking nothing - is a place called rest. Knowing full well that our efforts or work could never win this position and privilege. God completed this work for us - and we can live out the glorious benefits of resting in that work’s completeness and perfection for eternity!
