Luke 17:5 (NKJV), “And the apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith.’”.
Faith, according to the Bible, is continuously acquired through us hearing God's Word (Romans 10:17). For the believers who walked and talked with the physical Jesus on earth, the words He spoke were truth, and as they meditated on them, faith would come to them to do what He instructed them to do. In context of this scripture, Jesus was teaching the disciples how to live right and free from offence. Living righteously for the Lord takes great faith, and the disciples wanted to have their faith increased so they could live in a way that pleased Him. They wanted Jesus to explain, teach, and show them more truth, so they could see and understand the ways of the kingdom, and have more faith to experience and do the things Jesus did. But Jesus wanted them to see that it wasn’t about the “amount” of faith they had, as much as its “quality”. If they placed emphasis on the object of their faith - being Him - instead of the quantity of it, all fear, insecurity, unbelief and the trap of offence would be dealt with, and their faith would be uncontaminated. Since Jesus left the earth, believers now have the indwelling Holy Spirit. As we meditate on God’s Word, our minds are renewed to its truth, and the faith, which is within our spirits, rises up empowering us to live righteously for the Lord, and we are able to experience every good thing we have been given in Christ Jesus. The Holy Spirit is our helper and teacher, making the Word of God alive to us, and empowering us to live the ways of God’s kingdom, here on earth. The fact is, all this can be done by faith as small as a mustard seed, when we understand who we are in Christ Jesus, and all we can do for His kingdom, because He is in us. Invest time in studying God’s Word, as the Holy Spirit reveals its truth to you, your faith will be pure and powerful - giving you access to all that belongs to you because you are in Christ.
