Don't Be Unequally Yoked

1 Kings 10:4 (NASB), “For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of his father David had been.”

Solomon married many women. According to the Bible he had 700 wives and 300 concubines! Some of the women he married were foreigners and worshipped other gods and deities. Because of this they turned his heart away from serving the Lord wholeheartedly. While Solomon served the Lord, he also built high places for Chemosh and Molech, the detestable gods of the Canaanites. This was why God instructed the Israelites to kill all men, women, and children in the land of Canaan. Many argue that God was cruel for doing so. But if we look deeper into the scriptures, we see that He was not being cruel but was in fact being protective of His children! God knew that if any seed of the Canaanites remained, it would cause the future generations of the children of Israel to err and stumble through unlawful marriages. Ezra wrote that the holy seed was being mixed with the peoples of the land (Ezra 9:2). The children of Israel were intermarrying with pagans and as a result were turning away from the Lord. Had they married people of the commonwealth of Israel, they would not have had that problem. Paul addresses the problem of believers being united in partnerships and marriage covenants with unbelievers. He said, “Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?”  Be wise in your choice of business partners and your marital spouse.  God’s wisdom is well worth heeding.  If you want to see His blessing and favour in every area of your life, be sure to be in unity with those who consider His ways seriously and take living according to His will to heart.  Before you enter into your relationships, whether business, friendships, or marriage, ask the Lord to send you the right people so that together you will see His perfect will fulfilled in whatever you put your hand to.
