A Faithful Spirit Conceals a Matter

Judges 16:18 (NASB), “When Delilah saw that he had told her all that was in his heart, she sent word and called the governors of the Philistines, saying, ‘Come up once more, for he has told me all that is in his heart.’ Then the governors of the Philistines came up to her and brought up the money in their hands.”

Samson performed many mighty acts for the Lord: he killed 1000 Philistines with a jawbone of a donkey, he carried a city gate on his shoulders, and he caught 300 foxes and used them to set the fields of the enemy on fire! Yet Samson had a secret. He was not allowed to drink alcohol or cut his hair. If he did so his strength would depart from him. However, Samson made a very costly mistake. He shared his secret with a strange woman – Delilah who also happened to be a daughter of the Philistines, the enemies of the children of Israel. Because he shared the secret with her, she cut his hair, which sapped his strength, and the Philistines were able to capture him and gouge his eyes out. All of this could have been avoided if he did not share his secret. In the same way we must be careful of who we speak to and what we share with others. This doesn’t mean we should distrust or isolate ourselves from others or those around us. The Bible instructs us to bear one-another’s burdens in love and faith.  However, there are certain things that are not meant for the ears of everyone. Joseph made this mistake. He shared his dreams with the wrong audience – his jealous brothers. Although it was part of God’s plan for him to go to Egypt, he was thrown into a pit and sold into slavery as a result of his lack of discernment. Who you speak to and what you share with others is important. The Bible says in Proverbs that a talebearer reveals secrets, but one who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter (Proverbs 11:13). Going forward, put a guard on your mouth and don’t be too hasty to share with others what the Lord has told you or shown you, unless you are instructed by God to do so! Trust the Holy Spirit to give you discernment concerning who you can trust with the secrets He has revealed to your heart.
