John 1:37-38 (TPT): “And as soon as John’s two disciples heard this, they immediately left John and began to follow a short distance behind Jesus. Jesus turned around and saw they were following Him and asked, ‘What do you want?’ They responded, ‘Rabbi (which means, Master Teacher), where are You staying?’”

It’s obvious Jesus knew why John’s disciples were wanting to ‘jump-ship’ and follow Him. But He asked them anyway to reveal the motives of their hearts. We live in times where in spite of it being unpopular to follow Jesus and stand for His Word, many still turn to Him for selfish gain. They desperately want Him to provide for them, or answer their prayers – without any intention of coming to know His heart, or lay down their lives to be transformed into His image. The Lord knows the depth of our faith and the intentions of our hearts – just as He did of the rich young ruler who couldn’t face putting God’s kingdom above his personal wealth. Jesus didn’t want to see the man become poor, He only challenged what was most important to him. His Word cuts between bone and marrow, soul and spirit – revealing the true motives of our hearts. He wants our wholehearted devotion; to put His kingdom first; and for us to fully rely on Him as our source of life. Then He promises we will have and enjoy an overflowing and satisfying life. Determine in your own heart why you are following after Him. Being a follower of Christ requires the self-surrender that accepts the blessing!
