Who Is My Neighbour?

Luke 10:29 (NKJV): "But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "and who is my neighbor?""

The lawyer, who asked Jesus this question, started off wanting to know how he could inherit eternal life. He knew the scriptures said to love God with all his heart, soul, strength and mind; and also love his neighbour as himself. It was the last part of this requirement he was battling over, trying to justify his prejudice. It's easy to say we love the Lord, and want to pursue Him and obey His instruction concerning loving others. The truth is the only way we can really love others the way the Lord requires, is through the love He pours into our hearts. God's love is unselfish, unconditional, and without any prejudice. He cares deeply about the brokenness, the hurt and the pain of all people in this world. He wants to heal them and make them whole, restoring them to Himself. His unconditional love is best demonstrated and communicated through His own children, because it's what restores and heals us. So, instead of getting caught up in the semantics of who qualifies as "our neighbour" to love, or who is deserving to receive it; let's freely extend the love that's so freely and lavishly poured into our own hearts.
