Live Among but Don't Become

1 Peter 2:11 (AMPC): "Beloved, I implore you as aliens and strangers and exiles [in this world] to abstain from the sensual urges (the evil desires, the passions of the flesh, your lower nature) that wage war against the soul."

The distinction between a born again child of God and an unbeliever should be noticeably obvious. The Word says we should think, talk, and act as those who don't belong or come from here. That's because we have a different spirit to those who have not received the Saving grace of Jesus in their lives. Even though we live in this world, we are not citizens of it anymore. Instead, we are heavenly citizens who live according to a different standard of living. We carry the love and goodness and kindness of God within our nature. We live by faith in His faithfulness and believe in the principles and power of His Word. We don't live for self promotion or selfish gain - we live to serve and give of ourselves so we can minister life and peace and deliverance to those who are lost in shame and brokenness. That's why Peter strongly tells us to not participate in the sinful activities of a lost world that we once belonged to. They will constantly wage war against the new life and freedom we have in Christ. In verse 9 of 1 Peter, we see who we actually are in this world, "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God's] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." Be sure to understand Who you truly belong to in this world and choose to live as a worthy representative of Him. Be the light that shines brightly with His purpose among those who desperately need to see it.
