Galatians 5:25 (NASB): “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”
If you need victory over a particular habit that you just can't seem to kick, then it's time to have your spirit man dominate your flesh. The Word teaches us that our flesh or carnal nature has a mind or will of its own, and it's contrary to the mind and will of the Holy Spirit. Both are progressive in nature, meaning whichever one you give attention to - will dominate your life and lead you towards their respective goals. Romans 8:6, tells us exactly what those goals are. It says, "...the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever]." Paul urges every believer to have the Holy Spirit dominate our lives. After all, if we have chosen to live by the Spirit, then we must also choose to walk out each day by the Spirit. How do we do this? In Romans 8:5, Paul says we must be controlled by the desires of the Holy Spirit, and set our minds on and seek after those things that please Him. It's easy to know what they are when we spend time in His Word. The really good news is that the Holy Spirit actually empowers us to live this way - we don't do it in our own strength! John 6:63 says, "It is the Spirit who gives life; but the flesh profits nothing". So when there is a battle of wills between our flesh, or carnal nature, which is governed by our natural human reasoning; and our re-born spirit nature, which is governed by God's Spirit living in us; remember that whichever one we give attention to dominates our lives with pretty significant results. Choose to walk by the Spirit - and live!
