When a child of God accepts and receives the saving grace of Jesus Christ, the Bible says he becomes completely new in his spirit man. Where he was once dead to sin, he has been made alive in Christ! All the sin and failure of the past has been washed away and he is now what the Word calls, the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus! That means his spirit man is in right standing with God, he is clean, pure and justified to come boldly into the throne of grace, and freely commune with God. The blood of Jesus has made him free from the bondage of sin, which no longer has control over him. Now it's their responsibility to continue to live in that freedom. Their new born spirits must begin to influence their minds, which will in turn influence their physical bodies. How is this going to happen? By spending quality time in God's Word. Romans 12:1-2 calls this renewing our minds to the Word of God. A new spirit must have a new mind in order to live a new life. That's what the second part of Romans 8:1 is telling us. In order to remain free from the bondage of sin, we must move forward in the things of God. We must make the choice to not walk according to our flesh, but according to what our new spirit dictates. The Bible says our spirits have become one with the Spirit of the Living God. He lives in our spirits, which means we must follow after His way, by changing our thoughts to line up with His. And His thoughts are His Word! As you meditate wholeheartedly on God's Word day and night, you will see how it's truth begins to influence the way you think, speak and act, through the help of the Holy Spirit Who is in you. You will move forward in life, going from faith to faith, and glory to glory, never looking back. The life you once lived in sin is over and your new life, following after the Spirit has just begun!
