Genesis 22:12 (NKJV): "And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.""

Can you imagine the thoughts racing through Abraham's mind when God asked him to lay his only son down as a sacrifice? Isaac was the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham, from him would come the descendants that would bless the earth! Why then would God require Isaac as a sacrificial offering? The Bible shows Abraham completely trusting God - he didn't argue or negotiate with Him. He simply demonstrated his utter faith in God, despite this strange and awful request. Abraham's faith was not only in the promise (Isaac), it was in the One who made the promise. He knew God would provide and would keep His word. Hebrews 11:19 tells us exactly what was going through Abraham's mind at the time: "For he reasoned that God was able to raise [him] up even from among the dead..." Abraham learned that God is faithful. Part of growing in our relationship with God is growing in our confidence to trust that He is willing and able to do all He has promised to do. Regardless of how confusing the circumstances may seem, God's trustworthy character is irrefutable. What's more, our absolute trust in Him is what pleases Him the most, and causes us to walk in the fullness of His favour and promises.
