Deuteronomy 28:2 (AMPC): "And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God."
For centuries, people have associated poverty with something God inflicts on His people. The truth is, being in lack or just barely having enough is certainly not a blessing in disguise. That idea is completely contrary to what the Word of God teaches us. Those who buy into this belief never experience the freedom from poverty, and the blessing of prosperity to the extent the Word has promised. That's largely due to a lack of faith or confidence to believe that God's will really is for us to prosper in every area of our lives.
In Deuteronomy 28 the question of whether poverty is a curse or blessing in disguise, is clearly explained. In verses 1 through 14 God describes that His blessing on our lives is prosperity. Then in verses 15 through 31, God describes lack and poverty as a curse. The curse of poverty was something Jesus dealt with on the cross. He redeemed us from it and made a way for us to live free from lack, as we put His kingdom principles first in our lives. The curse has always had a purpose to destroy, not bring something good out of something bad. It's never going to make anyone more spiritual, or bring them joy. It may make them more religious - which is an oppressive, life-sucking spiritual bondage; but never will the curse result in liberty of any kind.
The nature of poverty has and will always remain the same - it is always a curse. As children of God, we need to get our thinking in line with the truth of God's Word - not the mistaken opinions of people. Because of the finished work of the cross - we don't have to settle for less and live under the curse of poverty. We have been set free to follow after God's ways and prosper!
